| Description |
Lin Xian-tang, first name Chao-chen,
Da-zhuang and Xiang-tang with formal name Guan-yuan. He was
born in 1881 as the eldest child of Lin Wen-qin, the third child
in the five brothers in Upper House among the cousins. People
called him ¡§Third Master in A Zhao Wu.¡¨ He wrote a book ¡§Travel
around the World.¡¨ He lost his father when he was young and
was raised by his grandmother Madame Luo. He died in Japan at
age of 76 in 1956.
He cherished the blessings, treated people kindly and was willing
to help the poor. In 1910, he joined the Li Club where he sang
poems and helped develop the cultural and educational businesses.
He established Taichung High School and Lai Yuan High School.
Under the influence of Liang Qi-chao, he endeavored himself
in the nationalist movements in Taiwan. He was once the president
of Xing Ming Club and led his fellow countrymen to plead for
the establishment of Taiwan assembly and organized ¡§Taiwan Cultural
Association¡¨ to fight against the Japanese by literature. After
that, he worked as the consultant of Populace Party and local
autonomy in dedication to the nationalist movements in Taiwan.
Mr. Lin Xian-tang led the democratic and cultural movements
under Japanese occupation and was the representative in the
first Assembly in Taiwan Province. The courage and judicious
judgment he expressed is the rare example in the history in
Taiwan! Later, he went to Japan to cure his headache and died
there.
In memory of his deeds, his scions built a memorial hall in
Lai Yuan in Wufeng (currently the campus of Mingtai High School)
where his treasured calligraphy, poems, old photos, daily items
and collection of poems by major poetry clubs in early Taiwan,
relevant documents of Li Club members, original furniture, treasured
costume and collections at Lin¡¦s Mansion in Wufeng are displayed.
In addition to the display of the above, many cultural activities
were held in coordination with the School such as the series
of activities of ¡§A Zhao Wu Cultural Festival¡XUnderstanding
the Historical Changes of Democracy in Taiwan by Knowing Mr.
Lin Xian-tang¡¨ and ¡§A Zhao Wu Cultural Festival¡XCentennial Anniversary
of Li Club,¡¨ which helps the culture revive and the later generations
can emulate the predecessors to continue the traditions. |
