Appearance ¡G This is a miniature woodpecker. The color of the upper is mingled with black and white, the bottom is light brown with black, thin and vertical spots. The cheeks and the feather of the ears are black surrounded with a circle of white cheek-line. On both sides of the hindbrain are red spots. Habitual Behavior ¡G They always appear on the upper trunk or thick branches by single or in pairs and corkscrew up around the tree. They fly rapidly and wavy. When they fly or forage, they usually sing. Their main food is the insect. In winter, they will eat seeds or fruits. They like to dig a hole as the nest on the trunk and they can lay four eggs once.
Distribution ¡G It distributes from India to China, the southeast of Siberia, Korea and Southeast Asia southwards; it also could be seen at the forest of middle and lower altitudes in Taiwan. |
