After moving to Wufeng, each
generation of the Lin¡¦s made a living by farming and practiced
martial art with the only exception of Lin Wen-qin, who did
not like martial art. He admired Confucius and Mencius and like
to study scriptures. He became a mandarin in 1893 and gradually
influenced the Lin¡¦s into a family of literature from martial
arts.
He had a gentle heart, treated others kindly and was enthusiastic
in serving the neighborhoods. He built roads and bridges in
poor villages, donated food and money to the poor and spend
a great amount of money to reconcile the armed battles in Quanzhou
for more than 10 years. He provided free services to the travelers
at the ford of Dadu Stream near Wuzi to show his compassion
and his amiable style were admired by the villagers.
Lin Wen-qin was often traveling between Hong Kong and Taiwan
for his camphor business and often felt he was bounded by the
outside world. As his mother was old, to treat her well while
she was still alive, he spent a great amount of money building
a southern style garden of magnificence, delicacy and tranquility
at the foot of Jiu Jiu Mountain behind the Lin¡¦s Mansion. This
was the place to please his mother and named ¡§Lai Yuan¡¨ after
Lao Lai Zi who entertained his parents even when he was very
old. |
