The Affiliated Orchestra

In order to promote the traditional culture and fine art activities, the Taichung County Cultural Center has been making serious efforts on preserving local features since its foundation. In the March of 1991, we organized a Chinese Classical Orchestra by the support of our previous magistrate Mr. Liao-yi Liao. Schoolteachers from elementary schools and junior high schools in this county, students from the schools all over Taiwan and the general public who were fond of traditional music comprised this orchestra.

The initial period was a tough challenge, as we had neither financial resources nor musical instruments. The entire orchestra depended on its members’ enthusiasm. Thanks to Council for Culture Affairs, Taiwan Provincial Department of Education and the magistrate Liao in dealing with the financial difficulties and musical instruments supply, the orchestra has gradually grown from thirty at the beginning to fifty-six members up to now.

The  members of the orchestra practice together on Saturday evenings regularly. As an amateur orchestra, our members are by and large excellent in skills and celebrated musicians are frequently invited to conduct us. We have therefore been making great improvements. Since its foundation, the orchestra has been eager to participate in all kinds of performing activities, such as the 1991 Festival of Arts and Literature held by the Council for Culture Affairs, the culture-inheritance course for the schoolteachers based in Taichung held in the June of 1992, and the acclaimed four-county performing tour in the December of 1991.

In the 1991 Festival of Arts and Literature held by the Council for Culture Affairs, we performed four concerts entitled “Aroma of Melody: The Beauty of Classical Chinese Music” in Kaohsiung County, Pindong County, Kaohsiung City and Taichung County. We received great feedback.

In 1992, we performed four concerts entitled “The Golden Late Autumn” in Yunlin County, Xinzhu City, Tainan County and Taichung County and received overwhelming response.

In 1993, we went abroad to perform three concerts in Singapore with Singapore Art Chorus.

In the 1994 Festival of Arts and Literature held by the Council for Culture Affairs, we performed two concerts entitled “Celebrate Peace in Orchestral Music”.

In 1995, we had three in-county performing tour concerts entitled “In the Wonderland of Orchestral Music”.

In 1996, we performed four concerts entitled “The Beauty of Orchestral Melody” at National Taichung Second Senior High School, Qingtian Hall in Jinmen, Jinmen Municipal Social Education Hall and Taichung County Cultural Center.

In the May of 1997, we performed “The Grace of Orchestral Melody” in Dayia, Wuqi, Tanzi in Taichung County. In the December of the same year, we performed “The Banguet” in Taichung Zhongxing Hall, the National Makung Senior High School, Penghu County Tianhou Temple Square and Taichung County Cultural Center.

In the June of 1998, we performed four concerts entitled “June Jasmine” inside the county. In December, we performed “The Grace of Orchestral Melody: Spring Greetings” at Zhongli City  Art Museum and Zhanghua County Hall.

In 1999, we performed four concerts entitled “The Floating Colorful Cotton” inside this county.

The 2000 Taichung County Cultural Center Chinese Classical Orchestra Performing Tour: “Pipe, Flute, Drinking and Enchanted Melody”

September, 2000, four concerts entitled “Flying with the Wings of Musical Notes”

October to November, 2001, four concerts entitled “The Moon, the Melody and the Floating Scent”

06, December 2002, “Mulan”

It is noteworthy that we were the first amateur orchestra that had a chance to perform at National Concert Hall. We also received gracious acclamations.
