In order to promote the traditional
culture and fine art activities, the
Taichung County Cultural Center has
been making serious efforts on
preserving local features since its
foundation. In the March of 1991, we
organized a Chinese Classical
Orchestra by the support of our
previous magistrate Mr. Liao-yi
Liao. Schoolteachers from elementary
schools and junior high schools in
this county, students from the
schools all over Taiwan and the
general public who were fond of
traditional music comprised this
orchestra.

|
The initial period was a
tough challenge, as we had neither
financial resources nor musical
instruments. The entire orchestra
depended on its members’ enthusiasm.
Thanks to Council for Culture
Affairs, Taiwan Provincial
Department of Education and the
magistrate Liao in dealing with the
financial difficulties and musical
instruments supply, the orchestra
has gradually grown from thirty at
the beginning to fifty-six members
up to now.

|
The members of the
orchestra practice together on
Saturday evenings regularly. As an
amateur orchestra, our members are
by and large excellent in skills and
celebrated musicians are frequently
invited to conduct us. We have
therefore been making great
improvements. Since its foundation,
the orchestra has been eager to
participate in all kinds of
performing activities, such as the
1991 Festival of Arts and Literature
held by the Council for Culture
Affairs, the culture-inheritance
course for the schoolteachers based
in Taichung held in the June of
1992, and the acclaimed four-county
performing tour in the December of
1991.
